Research Activities
Herbal Extraction

PLSL undertakes several activities in the area of herbal extraction: These include:
- Screening; marker identification and standardization of selected herbs; formulation and development of analytical methods for evidence-based innovative phytopharmaceuticals
- Enrichment of phytochemicals active in selected herbal extracts and activity profiling based on bioactivity guided fractionation to obtain patentable NCEs
Phytopharmaceuticals under development:
- NPS 31807: TNF blocker formulation in the form of tablets and capsules, from an Indian weed Sphaeranthus indicus undergoing Phase II clinical trials for rheumatoid arthritis, and Phase II trials for psoriasis
- NPH 30907: An anti-dermatophyte formulation for topical application developed from the rhizomes of Hydechium spicatum has completed successful Phase II clinical trials for fungal infections
- NPB-001-056: This product has been developed from the leaves of Piper betel, standardized for its active phytochemical, under Phase I clinical trials for imatinib-resistant chronic myeloid leukemia (CML)
- Cubeba: Under development for local as well as systemic candidiasis
